Attorney Nick  Wooldridge is representing former employee Nickolas Sharp, who is charged with stealing gigabytes of sensitive data from Ubiquiti Inc. and then extorting the company for around US$1.9 million in Bitcoin by posing as an anonymous hacker. Sharp is accused of using a VPN to download the data in December 2020, sending the ransom demand in January, and subsequently publishing some of the stolen information – actions that reportedly caused Ubiquiti’s stock to fall by about 20% and wiped out roughly US$4 billion in market value. Wooldridge’s involvement highlights the complex intersection of insider threats, cyber extortion, and corporate risk – and he aims to ensure Sharp’s legal rights are fully defended amid serious federal charges.

As a result, Sharp has been indicted in federal court in Manhattan and faces a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
