New data from the Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD)School safety in Las Vegas shows a significant rise in children being struck by vehicles during school commute hours across the Las Vegas Valley, raising broader concerns about child safety, independence, and mobility—particularly for autistic and neurodivergent students navigating school environments.

According to official figures, 327 children have been hit by vehicles this school year during before- and after-school hours, more than triple the total recorded the previous year. Nearly half of those involved, 151 children, were riding e-scooters or e-bikes at the time of the incidents.

For many families of autistic children, transportation and school independence are already complex topics. Sensory processing differences, difficulty with impulse control, challenges with spatial awareness, or difficulty interpreting traffic speed and intent can all influence how safely a child navigates busy environments.

Officials note that the rise of faster electric mobility devices has introduced additional risk factors in already complex school-zone environments.

“Some of these e-devices can reach speeds of 35 to 40 miles per hour,” said Lt. Michael Campbell of CCSDPD’s traffic division. “If something goes wrong, that can be catastrophic.”

Developmental Differences, E-Devices, and Risk Awareness in School Zones

The CCSDPD data tracks injuries involving children 18 and under during weekday school commute hours, including pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, and riders of e-scooters and e-bikes.

Within the current school year, four children have died, and 12 have suffered serious injuries under these conditions. Of the fatalities, one involved an e-scooter, one a bicycle, and two were pedestrians.

High school students account for the largest share of incidents, with 179 of the 327 total victims in that age group. Among those, 94 were riding e-scooters or e-bikes.

For neurodivergent children, including autistic students, independence milestones such as traveling to and from school often require additional planning, structured routines, and safety scaffolding. Experts say that when mobility tools increase speed and reduce predictability, they can add new layers of risk for children who may already struggle with situational awareness or rapid environmental changes.

Lt. Campbell noted that many incidents involve rapid movement between sidewalks, bike lanes, and roadways—situations that require quick judgment and consistent awareness of surrounding traffic.

“They’re going faster, and when they go faster, they’re less predictable,” he said.

Autism, Safety Systems, and the Need for Structured Support

Safety experts and advocates emphasize that reducing injuries requires both infrastructure improvements and greater awareness of how different children are, especially neurodivergent children.

Erin Breen of UNLV’s Road Equity Alliance Project acknowledged that while the data has limitations, it still highlights an urgent need for prevention and education. She also stressed that driver awareness plays a major role in reducing harm.

“But they need the parents to pay attention,” she said. “They need the parents’ help.”

For autistic children in particular, safety is not only about traffic laws, but also involves predictable routines, consistent supervision, clear communication, and structured independence planning. As mobility tools like e-scooters and e-bikes become more common, families often face new decisions about readiness, safety, and developmental fit.

In many cases, families are left navigating these choices without clear guidance or accessible developmental safety frameworks tailored to neurodivergent needs.
