Authorities say officers initially responded at around 1:20 a.m. to a report of a domestic violence incident involving a male suspect who was allegedly battering a female and attempting to take a child from a residence.
While officers were on their way, they received additional information that the suspect was armed with a handgun and had already fired shots in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
When police arrived, the female told officers that the suspect was inside the residence with the child and was still armed.
After additional units arrived, the suspect exited the residence while holding the child hostage and pointing a firearm. Officers gave commands for the suspect to surrender, but he refused and continued moving toward them while holding the child.
Police then opened fire, striking the suspect.
At the same time, the suspect discharged his weapon, striking the child.
Medical personnel transported the child to a nearby hospital, where the victim—reported to be under five years old—was pronounced dead. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities stated that the incident began as a domestic violence situation and quickly escalated into a hostage scenario involving a firearm. The case is still under scrutiny and more info is expected.
