While Hennen is considered a central figure in this case, dozens of other individuals are also facing charges related to the rigging schemes. 39 players across 17 Division 1 NCAA teams are accused of participating in the rigging schemes.
Prior to his arrest, Hennen was active on social media. Online, he called himself a “betfluencer” and described himself as a self-made millionaire. He often repeated the story of how he came from a small Pennsylvania town and now flies on private jets, gambling up to $1 million a week.
Investigators looked into Hennen’s background and quickly found that he had been convicted for drug and gambling-related charges in the past. He did time in jail in Pittsburgh. Again, in 2006, he was sentenced to probation after being convicted in Allegheny County for another gambling scheme. Things only escalated from there.
In 2009, Hennen was accused of being involved in a stabbing. The victim, a former Duquesne University basketball player, accused Hennen of stabbing him after he confronted Hennen about cheating in a card game. He was taken into custody two weeks after the incident for an unrelated DUI.
Shortly after that, Hennen faced two more felony charges after getting arrested for possession of 500 grams of cocaine. When he went to court to face multiple charges related to drug and assault charges, he potentially faced up to ten years if convicted.
He agreed to testify in an unrelated case in exchange for a reduced sentence of only two-and-a-half years in prison.
This extensive criminal history only further supports the theory that Hennen is behind the massive ongoing fraud and bribery schemes. By 2022, Hennen was using Instagram and other online platforms to launch online betting consultancy businesses.
Over the years, Hennen eventually took his betting scams global. At one point, he was making six-figure bets on Chinese basketball games.
In Las Vegas, both bribery and fraud could be levied as misdemeanors or felonies based on various factors. If you have an extensive criminal history, then it’s important to understand that your past convictions will always play a role in how severe your charges will be in future criminal cases.
Other aggravating factors that could result in longer sentences include using a deadly weapon, the status of the victim, whether your crime was gang-related, and the overall impact of the crime on the victim(s). Typically, if extreme trauma or injuries are the result of a crime, then the charge is upgraded, and the penalties are more serious.
