School campus in Las VegasA Clark County judge has stopped a criminal case against a former school campus monitor after deciding he cannot currently understand the proceedings or help his own lawyer.

Antonio Vaughn, who is 43, is now facing multiple charges tied to alleged sexual misconduct with a middle school student. District Judge Christy Craig found him incompetent, meaning the case cannot move forward until further evaluation and possible treatment.

The Allegations That Led to Arrest

Police took Vaughn into custody in April. According to authorities, he kissed a 13-year-old girl on the grounds of Schofield Middle School. Officers also said he had been cautioned before about contacting students through social media. Vaughn had worked for the Clark County School District since 2018 as a campus safety monitor. The district ended his employment after the arrest.

What the Competency Ruling Means

Two doctors examined Vaughn and reported that he cannot understand the charges or assist in his defense. They also described him as a potential danger to himself and others. The court ordered that he be moved into the care of the Nevada Department of Human Services so treatment can begin. While that process continues, the criminal case remains on hold.

Vaughn was still listed as in custody at the Clark County Detention Center when the court filed the commitment order. His attorney has not spoken publicly about the ruling.

How These Cases Usually Proceed

When a judge declares someone incompetent, the focus shifts from trial preparation to treatment and repeated evaluations. The original charges do not disappear. If doctors later determine the person can understand the case and work with counsel, the prosecution can resume. Until then, the legal process stays paused.
