According to reports, the marshal was riding a motorcycle near Campbell and Gowan roads when a vehicle approached and smashed into him.
The biker, Randy Hawkes, was thrown from his motorcycle and was significantly injured. Despite that, the offending vehicle did not attempt to stop. A witness who saw the whole incident go down attempted to follow the culprit and get his license plate numbers, but he was only able to get a few of the last digits. At that point, the driver made the decision to turn back around and render aid to Hawkes.
When police arrived at the scene at around 6 P.M., they found Hawkes suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. He was immediately transported to a nearby University Medical Center where he was diagnosed with internal bleeding. The marshal’s condition was deemed serious enough to warrant timely surgery. Hawkes had a plate and screw installed in his lower left tibia. Since his surgery, Hawkes has been released from the hospital.
On the night of the crash, Hawkes was on his way to a friend’s birthday party.
Investigators discovered a nearby surveillance camera that captured the crash and learned that the other vehicle was Jeep Grand Cherokee. Investigators estimate it was a model from 2021-2025.
In Nevada, it’s a serious crime to leave the scene of a motor vehicle accident that causes damage or leads to injuries. At minimum, a person convicted of a hit-and-run will be charged with a misdemeanor resulting in up to six months in jail and fines of up to $1,000. Anytime that hit-and-run led to injuries, however, it’s likely that the crime will be levied as a category B felony. If convicted, then you could face anywhere from two to 20 years in prison. Your sentence might also include fines of up to $5,000.
Both of these charges will also impact your driving privileges. A misdemeanor hit-and-run will result in up to six points being added to your record. A felony conviction could result in a license suspension or revocation. If a fatality is involved, then the driver’s license will be revoked.
Another situation you could face is financial liability for the impacts of the crash. If the victim or their family decides to pursue a civil lawsuit, then you might be found responsible for paying for the impacts of the accident.
On top of these consequences, fleeing the scene of an accident could cause the victim much more harm, especially if they’re unable to call the authorities for help.
