fatal DUI in Las VegasAccording to court records, the crash in question initially left a 12-year-old minor with life-threatening injuries but later proved fatal. During the Las Vegas hearing, the suspect’s bail was set at $250,000.

The collision occurred one day prior, on Friday, in the early morning hours. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the young boy was walking on foot across a crosswalk near 21st Street and Owens Avenue. He was on his way to attend class at the nearby Smith Middle School.

Just before 8 A.M., a 2019 Mitsubishi SUV being operated by Brooks came speeding up to the crosswalk and struck the boy directly. Rather than stopping to render aid to the injured youngster, Brooks reportedly left the scene and drove off to a nearby apartment complex.

The injured minor was reportedly thrown from the roadway and into a nearby fence. Initially, he was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, but his condition later became worse. He was officially declared brain dead and then passed away on October 6th.

Sadly, Clark County School District officials confirmed that the intersection where the boy was hit only has a crosswalk. No other pedestrian safety controls or features are at the location.

Authorities were able to quickly track down the suspect. According to the arrest report, the suspect admitted to being involved in the crash. He also admitted that he smoked marijuana right before getting behind the wheel and crashing into the youngster, Cristofer Suarez. He also told police that he chose to flee the scene and return home to smoke even more marijuana because “he knew he was going to jail.” Brooks was charged with three felonies initially, including DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm and reckless driving, but those charges have likely been upgraded after the victim passed away.

Brooks will appear in court again on October 21. Despite his argument that he was not a flight risk, prosecutors used his hit-and-run as proof that he might attempt to flee again.
