This important organization manages the state’s regulation of the cannabis industry and ensures that the state’s laws are being enforced.
Another thing that makes this organization so important is that Nevada has been a national leader when it comes to cannabis regulation, so the entire nation is always watching the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board very closely. The new chair, Ondra Berry, has stated that it’s his goal to provide opportunities for the state to remain at the forefront of this industry.
Governor Joe Lombardo believes his appointment will make a fantastic chair. Ondra Berry previously worked with the Reno Police Department and the Nevada National Guard until he retired in 2024.
Berry says that he plans on focusing on three primary goals during his time as chair of the board:
Berry wants to ensure that businesses are doing things legally throughout Nevada. One primary thing he plans to focus on is ensuring these businesses test their products and remain transparent about them.
Another great thing about Berry is that he isn’t focused on the profit that could potentially result from the state’s cannabis industry. When asked about the decrease in taxable cannabis sales throughout the state from 2022 to 2024, he responded by saying that it isn’t the board’s responsibility to ensure that there is an increase in cannabis tax revenue.
Instead, it’s the board’s responsibility to ensure that the businesses operate within the law and within customer expectations. Berry believes that their role in regulating the industry will help legitimate cannabis businesses grow.
In Las Vegas, recreational cannabis is legal for adults who are over 21, but strict rules are in place that dictate who can buy cannabis, where they can make these purchases, how much they can possess, and where the cannabis can be consumed. In general, it’s still a crime to drive under the influence of cannabis or purchase it from a non-authorized seller.
It’s also a crime to possess more than 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower or one-quarter ounce of concentrate. Cannabis should also be smoked in private residences, not out in public.
