According to Berlin authorities, the van entered Tiergarten park around 10 p.m., struck several people, and then hit a tree. The park sits close to the route the Pride march had taken earlier that day. Some of those hurt were reported to have life-threatening injuries.
Police said they had identified a suspect. Spokesman Florian Nath told reporters the man is known to them and has connections to Islamic circles in Berlin.
Officers searched intensively and asked anyone with photos or video from the scene to contact them.
The suspect was located the next day, on the 26 th of July, in Spandau and fatally shot by police after reportedly approaching officers with a knife.
Celebrations Cut Short
The main event in front of the Brandenburg Gate was canceled around 10:15 p.m. A band’s performance was interrupted, and people were told to leave the area and stay clear of the park. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner called the attack a blow against a free and open society after what had been a peaceful and lively parade earlier in the day.
Hundreds of thousands of people had come out for Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. Attendees described a sudden change from celebration to confusion as emergency vehicles filled the streets.
