Jesse Ross Cowie entered a guilty plea Thursday to one count of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing it. The plea came after agents searched his home and examined his electronic devices.
Records show that from August 2021 through April 2024, Cowie obtained the material from a known source. A later search turned up more than 23,000 images and nearly 2,000 videos on his devices. The FBI handled the investigation, and prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada are handling the case in court.
Sentencing is set for October 14 before Judge Andrew P. Gordon. Under federal law, the receipt charge carries a mandatory minimum of five years and can go as high as 20 years. Possession also carries a maximum of 20 years.
**What These Federal Cases Usually Look Like**
Most cases involving digital files start with a tip or investigation that leads to a search warrant. Once devices are seized, specialists go through them carefully. The volume of material, the ages of the children shown, and signs of deliberate collecting all play a role in how the charges are framed and what kind of sentence prosecutors recommend.
These cases fall under strict federal guidelines. People facing them can end up with long prison terms, years of supervision after release, and registration requirements that last a long time. Getting a clear picture of the evidence and the available options early on matters a great deal.
When Having the Right Attorney Counts
Federal cases built on digital evidence involve search warrants, detailed forensic reports, and complicated sentencing rules. An attorney who knows how these prosecutions work can review the government’s files, point out weaknesses if they exist, and help a client prepare for what comes next, whether that is a plea or further proceedings.
