MISSION STATEMENT

Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) ensure the fairness and integrity of the tax system
by educating low income taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities, by providing pro
bono representation to taxpayers in tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), by
conducting outreach and education to taxpayers who speak English as a second language (ESL),
and by identifying and advocating for issues that impact low income taxpayers.

WHO ARE WE?

Nevada Legal Services (NLS) is a statewide non-profit law firm that offers a LITC where clients
may receive assistance, including representation when appropriate, in controversies with the IRS
regarding tax issues. NLS can also help taxpayers respond to IRS notices and correct account
problems. Your information is protected by attorney-client privilege and confidentiality. We are
not part of the IRS or any government agency.

WHAT DO WE DO?

NLS provides free representation with issues such as tax refunds, child tax credits, earned
income credit, innocent spouse relief, injured spouse, audits, and examinations, failure to file
returns, deficiency notices, liens, and levies, offer in compromise, and employment status. We
also provide outreach and community education presentations to persons for whom English is a
second language (ESL).

FAQ

1:   Is there an age limit on claiming my child as a dependent?

Age is a factor in the qualifying child test, but a qualifying relative can be any age.

2:   Are child support payments deductible by the payer or can the payer claim an exemption for the child?

Child support payments are neither deductible by the payer nor taxable income to the payee.

3:   Can I receive a tax refund if I am currently making payments under an installment agreement or payment plan for a prior year’s federal taxes?

No.  Regardless of whether you are participating in an installment agreement or payment plan with the IRS, you may not get all of your refund if you owe certain past-due amounts, such as federal tax, state tax, a student loan, or child support.

4:   What is a split refund?

A split refund lets you divide your refund, in any proportion you want, and direct deposit the funds in up to three different accounts with U.S. financial institutions.

5:   Can the IRS levy my Social Security?

Yes.  The IRS can levy up to 15% of your Social Security Benefits.
