According to Metro Police
, the incident happened around 6:10 a.m. on July 9 near the City Impact Urban Food Bank on East Sahara Avenue. The victim, 60-year-old Scott Dennis, was waiting in line with his girlfriend when another man approached her asking for a cigarette. When she said she didn’t have any, things quickly escalated.
Police say the man got upset and started insulting her. Dennis stepped in to protect his girlfriend, and the argument turned physical. The suspect allegedly struck Dennis, knocking him down. Then a second man joined in. Surveillance video reportedly shows the pair beating Dennis on the sidewalk and dragging him into the parking lot, punching and kicking him while he tried to defend himself.
Bystanders eventually broke up the fight. Both suspects ran off before police arrived. Dennis was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive. Shiloh Leutu, 38, was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with the beating. A second suspect is still being sought.
