Bonnie Tollefson checked her mailbox in late June and found it completely empty. A few days later, her husband noticed more than $600 in cash advances and charges on their credit card that neither of them had made.
They believe their mail had been taken.
When she went to the post office on West Russell Road, a clerk told her there had been a lot of theft in the area and that someone had stolen a master key. Tollefson filed reports with the Postal Inspection Service and Metro Police.
More than two months later, the only reply she got was an automated message saying the theft “may” be investigated.
Brian Kaszuba lives near Post and Fort Apache. He came back from a short trip in July and found his locked neighborhood mailbox empty. He reported it to the same agencies. Metro eventually called and said they had no leads, so the case was basically closed. One of the missing items was a handmade birthday gift from his grandmother.
Other people in the area have reported checks taken from the mail, washed, and cashed for thousands of dollars. After Tollefson posted about it on Nextdoor, she quickly learned she was not the only one dealing with this.
Trevor Hudson, a Postal Inspection Service inspector in Las Vegas, confirmed there is an active investigation into the thefts in those southwest neighborhoods. He said inspectors have developed leads they are working with but would not share details because the case is still open. He also said the agency takes mail theft seriously and will contact Tollefson about her concerns.
Across the country, the Postal Inspection Service points to Project Safe Delivery, a program started in 2023 to protect letter carriers and the mail.
Since then, they report more than 1,200 arrests for robberies of letter carriers and mail theft, along with drops in both reported robberies and mail-theft complaints. More electronic locks for mailboxes are also being rolled out.
