The murder trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the only person charged in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur, started Monday in Las Vegas. Davis has pleaded not guilty. Here is what people need to know if they want to sit in the courtroom, watch from the building, or follow the case from home.
Everything is happening at the Regional Justice Center at 200 Lewis Avenue in downtown Las Vegas. Because so many people want to attend and the main courtroom is small, the court is using a daily lottery for public seats once jury selection finishes.
How the Daily Lottery Works
After the jury is picked, anyone who wants a seat in the main courtroom should go to Room 2421, the overflow room. Arrive at least one hour before court is supposed to start that day and put your name in the random drawing. If you are chosen, a court marshal will walk you to your assigned seat. Getting a seat one day does not mean you get one the next day. The drawing happens every court day.
During Jury Selection
Jury selection began August 10 and is expected to last several days. While that is going on, public seats in the main courtroom are not guaranteed because potential jurors take up most of the space. People can watch a live video feed in Room 2421 instead. Seats there are first come, first served.
If you do not win a lottery seat, you can still watch the live stream in the overflow room as long as there is space. The trial is also expected to get a lot of television and online coverage, though the judge decides what can be broadcast. The whole trial is expected to run about four weeks.
